The Terminology

The numbers, defined in plain English.

Forklift spec sheets pack a lot of near-identical-sounding dimensions into a small space. Here's what the ones that actually matter for comparing trucks really mean.

Load Capacity & Load Centre
The rated lift capacity is only meaningful together with the load centre distance it was measured at (typically 500mm) - loading a bulkier item shifts the effective centre and reduces the safe capacity.
Free Lift Height
How far the forks can rise before the mast itself starts to extend - important for working under low ceilings or inside containers and trailers.
Max Lift Height vs. Height Mast Extended
Max lift height is measured to the forks; height mast extended is the full extended mast height, which is taller and matters for overhead clearance.
Fork Carriage Class (DIN 15173)
The standardised carriage and hook size that determines which forks and attachments physically fit. Forklifts with different classes can't share attachments.
Working Aisle Width
The narrowest aisle a machine can turn and place a load in, quoted for standard pallet sizes - the number that actually determines warehouse layout.
Turning Radius vs. Internal Turning Radius
Outside turning radius is the machine's swept path; internal turning radius is the clearance at the machine's own inside corner. Both affect how tight a machine can manoeuvre.
Drawbar Pull vs. Max Drawbar Pull
Drawbar pull is the sustained pulling force available; max drawbar pull is the peak force for a moment. Relevant for towing or pushing through resistance.
Gradeability (Laden vs. Unladen)
The steepest ramp a forklift can climb, which drops significantly once it's carrying a rated load.
Fork Thickness, Width & Length
The three fork dimensions that determine what a machine can physically lift. Thicker or longer forks change the load's effective centre of gravity.
Service Weight vs. Axle Loads
The machine's own weight versus how that weight - plus a rated load - distributes across the front and rear axles laden and unladen. Relevant for floor loading limits, especially in multi-storey warehouses.
