The Terminology

The numbers, defined in plain English.

Aerial platform spec sheets quote several very similar-sounding height and reach figures. Here's what the ones that actually matter for comparing lifts really mean.

Working Height vs. Max Basket Height
Working height adds roughly 2m for an average operator's reach above the basket floor; max basket height is the platform floor itself. The two are always different numbers for the same machine.
Horizontal Outreach
How far the basket can extend sideways from the machine's centreline - the number that actually determines whether a lift can reach the work over an obstacle.
Up And Over Clearance
The height a machine needs to clear an obstacle, like a wall or pipe rack, before reaching down the other side. Smaller is more manoeuvrable in tight overhead spaces.
Jib Articulation Range
The total swing of the jib between its raise and lower angles. A wider range lets the basket work into confined spaces the main boom can't reach alone.
Slewing Angle & Continuous Slew
How far the turret can rotate. Most machines are limited to just under 360°, but a 'continuous slew' machine can rotate indefinitely in one direction without unwinding.
Basket Capacity vs. Basket Capacity At Max Reach
The rated basket load drops once the boom is fully extended at maximum outreach - two different numbers for the same machine.
Tailswing
How far the counterweight or turret overhangs the tracks or chassis when it rotates. A zero-tailswing machine stays within its own footprint.
Ground Bearing Pressure
The machine's weight spread across its tyre or track contact area. Lower pressure matters on soft ground, finished floors or roof work.
Gradeability (2WD/Tracks vs. 4WD)
The steepest slope a machine can drive on, which is usually higher once all-wheel drive is engaged.
Auxiliary / Emergency Descent Power
A backup 12V or hydraulic system that lowers the platform if the primary power source fails - a safety-critical spec worth comparing separately from drive performance.
