The Terminology

The numbers, defined in plain English.

Forestry spec sheets carry their own vocabulary for reach, cutting capacity and stability. Here's what the terms that actually matter for comparing carriers and heads really mean.

Felling Diameter
The maximum tree trunk diameter the saw head can cut through in a single pass - the headline capability number for a feller buncher.
Saw Type (Disc)
Most feller buncher heads use a rotating disc saw rather than a bar or chain. Disc saws cut faster and handle larger diameters, but the disc itself is a wear item.
Horizontal Reach
How far the boom and felling head can extend from the machine's centreline while cutting - determines how much ground can be worked from one position.
Cab Levelling Tilt
How far the operator's cab can independently tilt (forward, rear and side) to stay level while the carrier itself sits on sloped ground. Only some designs offer this.
Slewing Angle
The degrees of rotation available to the upper structure. 360° means continuous, unrestricted rotation.
Zero Tailswing
Whether the rear of the upper structure stays within the width of the tracks when it rotates - matters for working in tight stands of timber.
Tractive Force
The pulling force the tracks can put to the ground - determines how well a machine holds position and manoeuvres on steep or soft forest floor.
Base Carrier Length vs. Overall Length
The tracked undercarriage's own footprint length versus the machine's full length with the felling head attached - two different numbers that are often confused.
Reference Harvesting/Felling Head
Comparison figures like felling diameter and cutting radius are only meaningful alongside the specific head they were measured with, since the same carrier can run different heads.
